What is Nickel 200 Seamless Pipe
Nickel 200 seamless pipe is a commercially pure nickel product for process piping. The UNS designation N02200 identifies the material grade, while ASTM B161 defines the ordered pipe and tube product requirements. A grade name alone does not define the delivery condition, dimensions or inspection scope.

Primary Applications
Nickel 200 and low-carbon Nickel 201 seamless pipe are used in the following services.
High-Concentration Caustic Evaporators
Final-effect evaporator tubes in chlor-alkali plants where NaOH concentration exceeds 50%, and temperatures go above 315°C. Nickel 201’s graphitisation resistance is required here.
Sodium Hydroxide Storage and Transfer
Piping, vessels, and transfer lines for hot concentrated caustic storage in chemical plants use Nickel 201, as the higher carbon content of Nickel 200 creates a service life risk at sustained temperatures above 315°C.
Fluorine and Hydrogen Fluoride Handling
Piping and reactor components in fluorochemical production, where pure nickel resists anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and fluorine gas in dry conditions.
Alkaline Battery Components
Positive electrode tubes and structural elements in alkaline battery construction use Nickel 201 due to its electrical conductivity and caustic resistance.
Neutral Salt Handling at Elevated Temperatures
Process piping in potash and soda ash production where hot neutral solutions require a material resistant to both the process chemistry and high temperatures.
Material Characteristics and Selection
Nickel 200 combines useful resistance in assessed caustic environments with relatively high thermal and electrical conductivity. Selection for a particular process requires the chemical composition of the medium, concentration, temperature, contaminants and flow conditions. General references to nickel corrosion resistance should not be treated as approval for every acid, halogen or mixed chemical stream.
For extended elevated-temperature exposure around or above 315°C, assess low-carbon Nickel 201 seamless pipe and the applicable design requirements because Nickel 200 can be affected by graphitization. This selection consideration does not establish a pressure-service temperature rating.
Typical Piping Enquiries
Relevant enquiries include caustic handling and process transfer piping for chemically compatible service. State the corrosion allowance, cleaning requirements and any contamination-control criteria. Heat-exchanger tubing is a separate procurement case: use the Nickel 200 condenser and heat-exchanger tube page when the project specifies condenser or heat-exchanger tubes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nickel 200 pipe the same as Nickel 201 pipe?
No. Nickel 201 has a lower specified carbon limit. Select the grade against the operating conditions and verify it through the appropriate chemical analysis and ordered product requirements.
Can ASTM B161 be used for tube as well as pipe?
Yes. ASTM B161 covers both product forms. This page addresses pipe procurement; condenser and heat-exchanger tube enquiries should identify the specified tube standard and wall basis.
Does seamless Nickel 200 pipe have a fixed pressure rating?
No. A pressure rating requires the applicable design code, dimensions, temperature, allowable stress and service conditions.
What sizes and documents can be supplied?
Send the requested OD or NPS, wall or schedule, length, condition and document type. Availability is confirmed for the actual order combination.
Technical References
Material background: Special Metals Nickel 200 and 201 technical bulletin. Product specification scope: ASTM B161. Acceptance requirements follow the edition stated in the purchase order.
Specification Control and Dimensions
The quotation and purchase order must identify the material grade, product specification and edition, delivery condition, dimensions and acceptance requirements. Chemical analysis, mechanical test results and dimensional inspection must be assessed against the agreed requirements for the supplied heat and product form.
Available dimensions are confirmed for the requested grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length and delivery condition. Catalogue dimensions are not a guarantee that every size combination is available or held in stock. Dimensional tolerances, straightness, wall basis and cut-length tolerances are confirmed against the ordered specification.
Inspection and Traceability
State the inspection document type and any supplementary inspection in the enquiry. The agreed documentation should link the supplied material and heat marking to the material test results. Hydrostatic testing, nondestructive examination and supplementary tests are governed by the product specification and purchase order; test methods, coverage and acceptance criteria must be stated rather than assumed.
PMI can support alloy identification but does not replace the full chemical analysis or the material test certificate. Where carbon content distinguishes the ordered grade, use a chemical analysis method capable of measuring carbon. Specify any EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation and third-party witnessing before order confirmation; availability and scope are subject to agreement.
Design and Service Assessment
Seamless construction means the product has no longitudinal weld seam. It does not establish a universal pressure rating or corrosion guarantee. Design pressure, temperature and service life depend on the applicable code, dimensions, allowable stress, corrosion allowance, joint details and operating conditions. Typical material data must not be used as design allowable stresses.
Request a Quotation for Pipe
Send the grade and UNS designation; product specification and edition; NPS and schedule with the applicable dimensional standard, or actual OD and wall thickness; quantity; length; delivery condition; end finish; required inspection documents; and delivery destination. Include the operating medium, concentration, temperature and pressure when service suitability needs assessment. State the required delivery date so supply options can be reviewed.
