Tube specification and dimensional basis
ASTM B163 covers seamless nickel and nickel-alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes. The enquiry must state whether wall thickness is specified as average or minimum wall. Dimensions and tolerance requirements are checked against the ordered edition and the relevant product group, including any requirements for thin-wall or small-diameter tubing.
ASTM B161 also covers nickel pipe and tube, but it is a separate product specification. A generic tube description or the same UNS grade does not make B161 and B163 interchangeable. Pipe procurement for the same grade is described on the Nickel 200 seamless pipe page, and other tube sizes are listed under Nickel Seamless Tubes.
Material selection for heat-transfer service
Nickel 200 is considered where its conductivity and compatibility with the process medium support the heat-transfer design. Corrosion suitability depends on the actual temperature, concentration, contaminants and flow conditions. Extended exposure around or above 315°C requires a review of low-carbon Nickel 201 and the applicable design requirements.
Inspection and fabrication requirements
State the delivery condition, straightness and cut-length requirements. If the project includes tube bending, separately specify the bend radius, ovality, thinning limits, treatment and inspection requirements. Do not infer a bent-tube supply capability from the base material specification.
For the heat exchanger, define the tube-side and shell-side conditions, fabrication requirements and inspection plan. Material test values and typical physical properties do not replace exchanger design calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between average wall and minimum wall?
The terms specify different dimensional acceptance bases. State the required basis in the enquiry so the applicable tolerance rules can be checked against the ordered specification.
Can pipe NPS and schedule replace the tube dimensions?
For this tube enquiry, provide actual OD, wall basis and length. A pipe schedule alone does not define the required tube acceptance dimensions.
Is every Nickel 200 tube automatically certified to ASTM B163?
No. The product specification, edition, condition and inspection requirements must be stated and verified through the order and supply documents.
Can Nickel 200 tube be used above 315°C?
Extended high-temperature exposure requires a material and design review, including consideration of Nickel 201. The figure is a selection consideration, not a guaranteed operating limit.

Specification Control and Dimensions
The quotation and purchase order must identify the material grade, product specification and edition, delivery condition, dimensions and acceptance requirements. Chemical analysis, mechanical test results and dimensional inspection must be assessed against the agreed requirements for the supplied heat and product form.
Available dimensions are confirmed for the requested grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length and delivery condition. Catalogue dimensions are not a guarantee that every size combination is available or held in stock. Dimensional tolerances, straightness, wall basis and cut-length tolerances are confirmed against the ordered specification.
Inspection and Traceability
State the inspection document type and any supplementary inspection in the enquiry. The agreed documentation should link the supplied material and heat marking to the material test results. Hydrostatic testing, nondestructive examination and supplementary tests are governed by the product specification and purchase order; test methods, coverage and acceptance criteria must be stated rather than assumed.
PMI can support alloy identification but does not replace the full chemical analysis or the material test certificate. Where carbon content distinguishes the ordered grade, use a chemical analysis method capable of measuring carbon. Specify any EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documentation and third-party witnessing before order confirmation; availability and scope are subject to agreement.
Design and Service Assessment
Seamless construction means the product has no longitudinal weld seam. It does not establish a universal pressure rating or corrosion guarantee. Design pressure, temperature and service life depend on the applicable code, dimensions, allowable stress, corrosion allowance, joint details and operating conditions. Typical material data must not be used as design allowable stresses.
Request a Quotation for Tube
Send UNS N02200 and ASTM B163 with the required edition; outside diameter; wall thickness and whether it is specified as average or minimum wall; straight length or a separately specified bent configuration; quantity; delivery condition; end finish; inspection document type; supplementary inspection; and delivery destination. Any bending, ovality or post-bending treatment requirements must be separately agreed.
